Ice Age 3 = Huh-larious

I really loved Ice Age 3, it was AWESOME!

There was some drama this morning with a camper, but I won't go in to it. Suffice to say that even though I think something was wrong with him to begin with, a dramatic and traumatizing divorce does a lot to screw up a kid that young. I just hope J has the resources to deal with it; it's a tough problem they're facing and not always easy for someone who's essentially a single parent.

Tomorrow, in better news, is FRIDAY! I should go to bed now, I got caught up watching a really great Deadliest Catch documentary on the crew and a behind the scenes sort of look. It's really an amazing show; too bad the rest of reality TV can't be as good.

SSA's top 20 Names List for 2008

Now, I realize this is THIS years list, but still. I have multiples of all but an Emma, Madison, and Chloe from the top ten. And for the boys, I don't have any Christophers, but have multiples of almost all the rest in the top twenty.

Night at the Museum

SUCH a better day movie-wise.

The kids, however, wore me out to no end. Sarah and I were tried to our last nerve by the time it was over. I know their parents take them out in public places, and I know that they wouldn't put up with this behaviour, so it's beyond us why they think they can get away with it when we're around!

Other than that, the day was uneventful. I made headway with the after school database, then booked our trip to Lake Lanier next week. I'm pretty excited, I haven't been out there in a long time, but I'm a little worried about how all 100 of us are going to get out there since the Youth are taking all the vans for beach retreat! Yikes! I'm also worried about our counselor numbers-- it's our highest enrollment all summer!

I really need to clean my room, but I'm so terribly unmotivated right now. If I'd heard anything about the apartment, I could even start packing things up to move (since it's two weeks away!!) and that would get it done, but sadly no such news. Everyone keep your fingers crossed and thoughts with us; we could really use a place of our own!

G-Fail

I'm warning you now, this is a review of G-Force, the guinea pig movie Disney put out this week. It is clean, but unkind. This movie deserved no kindness. Also, I miss writing movie reviews.

This week is movie week, so today, tomorrow and Thursday we're taking the kids to a movie up at N. DeKalb. Today we had a choice between G-Force and UP!. Since I'd already seen UP!, I volunteered to see G-Force thinking that surely with a cast like this had to provide at least a little amusement. I mean, come on, Will Arnett, Bill Nighy, and Tracy Morgan? COME ON. It was a disaster. Utterly. There was nothing that saved this movie and its desperate attempt to pander to the adult audience it knew would be dragged to this puny excuse for a summer kids action flick.

The evil computer program that has to be stopped is called "Clusterstorm"-- no, that's not actually supposed to be clusterf*ck (favorite phrase of airliners 'round the world), not at all. THEN they decided to just dig a little lower than the pond scum of writing and "homage" Die Hard with a "Yippie cai-a, Coffee Maker" when the head guinea pig is riding a coffe maker gone mad. THAT'S NOT EVEN FUNNY. To homage a cultural cliche, you have to pass three tests-- those who know the cliche first hand have to be amused at the feint, those who know the cliche second hand half to be amused at the feint, and most importantly it has to be funny on its own. Die Hard came out when I was 3 and I'm the oldest counselor (aside from Richard, who is my age) there. My friend Sarah, who's older than I am, has never seen the movie but knows the cliche. When "Die Hardest" came out two years ago and THEY used the line it was FUNNY because it was BRUCE WILLIS saying it. These kids don't even know who Bruce Willis is because the only kids movies he's done he was voice talent. For the dog.

Even with the stellar cast, the writing was so awful and the music so poorly managed (for a summer blockbuster, they licensed three songs for repeated use-- "Boom Boom Pow" by the Black Eyed Peas, "Just Dance" by Lady Gaga, and "Jump" by Flo Rida ft. Nelly Furtado) that not even Bill Nighy could save it. Will Arnett wasn't given a single funny line (since when does THAT happen? The man is funny reading, "Are You There God, It's Me Margaret"!) and even Tracy Morgan's big funny of the movie ("I can't believe the MOLE was the MOLE!") was so covered up by unnecessary action sequences that it was lost in the melee.

In the end, this is a pure and plain example of what used to be known as Shrek (meh) or Madagascar (which has grown on me greatly) Syndrome-- movies that were made for kids but pander to adults by using cultural cliches. It will now be known as G-Force Syndrome. Adults don't go to kids movies expecting a movie for themselves; that's why babysitters, Friday nights, and The Hangover exist. I would totally see this if Bruckheimer (who is KNOWN for his extraneous action scenes, hellooooo Top Gun, Con Air, The Rock, and ARMAGEDDON) had made it for adults, the plot was complex enough that it would have worked, but as a kids movie... eh.

In fact, Mr. Bruckheimer, would you please remove yourself from the movie world? We were willing to forgive and forget with Kangaroo Jack, but twice? TWICE? Why?

/rant

Tomorrow is Night At the Museum 2 which I'm excited about. Now that Ben Stiller is past the first Madagascar, he's pretty good at making kids movies!

Day One

Gotta start somewhere right?

Today I did the 15 minute pilates workout (which is actually a 20 minute one, but I didn't do any of the standing stuff because I want to get my hip back in the proper place first), and my goal is to do the 15 minutes a day every day for the next week. Then, next Sunday I'll do the full 20 minute workout every day for a week. Week after that, I'll do the full 45 minute workout on Sunday, the 20 minutes during the week, and the 45 minute one on Saturday. While my ultimate goal is to do the 45 minute (full) one more often than the 20 minute (express) workout, I'd like to put my minimum at three times a week, so maybe full workouts on the weekends and Wednesdays maybe. I just really need to stay on top of it this time around. I started last summer when I moved in with Jan and Marc, and I guess because I didn't have a regular schedule post-airline, the whole thing fell through. Now, though, I'm trying to eat better and drink less soda (I've only had two sodas in the last four days! A Sprite and a Coke!), drink more tea. Cutting sodas out is kind of a concession for my beer drinking because, let's face it, beer geeks drink some pretty heavy beer. It's the kind of beer that doesn't actually have nutrition facts on the back!

I say that and it sounds like I'm an alcoholic; really, I only drink on the weekends and it's only like a few drinks a night MAX. Once a month, maybe Meg and I will go crazy and have a couple margaritas instead, but none of us are in that party mode-- that was pretty much over with after college. Plus, when we're drinking beer, we're eating things like fresh salsa, crudite "pizza", hummus, and beans and rice; not heavy on the queso dip and bar food you find with cheap beer! I totally geeked out at Whole Foods last night-- their beer section makes me feel like I've died and gone to heaven. It's bad news, too, because it's right next to the cheese and olives, and then the bakery! I found one of the rarer beers from the Allagash brewery, called Curieaux, and bought the last two bottles. I also made friends with the beer guy who said if I had any special requests, he'd be glad to put them in for me or hold something I wanted! Whoooooo-- gotta love the small town touch to a chain grocery! That's why I love Whole Foods!

Speaking of fresh salsa, my first pepper is FINALLY starting to push out! I'm SO excited-- I'll finally find out what kind of peppers I'm growing! I'm also going to find a place to plant some corn and chianti sunflowers (the red ones, they are super pretty), and I've got small pots to plant basil and other herbs in that we can keep around the apartment when we move. Mom's landlord is really cool, though, and doesn't mind if I plant the bigger stuff like corn, collards, mesclun, and sunflowers in the back yard along the fence-- he thinks it's pretty cool, actually!

Anyway, I'm gonna do a few more ab rounds and then hit the showers. We had a dog food fiasco coming back from Target (the bag just split open and got all over mom's freshly cleaned car!), so I'm going to take that back along with some other stuff that I got last night but don't want as badly as an adorable cherry-blossom-and-Japanese-print apron that they have on clearance for $7, and some other kitchen towels and nice oven mitts. I think between the two of us we only have one or two oven mitts, and they're pretty old-- Target has some nice KitchenAid ones on sale for a few bucks each! After that, it's off to Rosebud for a Yelp! event; hopefully they'll let me in since Emily can't make it-- I'm on the list, and I've been to one before, and I'm meeting up with Sid and Wendy (the nice couple we met at the last event) to all go in together.

I also just spotted my copy of "Walter the Farting Dog" that Martha gave me-- I will have to find this book for Julian. He will be immensely amused.

First Dance ;)

I don't know that the church is set up for this sort of thing (we're not going to be able to fit in to the Solarium), so we're probably going to do something like this for the entrance at the Solarium.

In Plain Sight

The hint of the day is this:

People think that names don't mean a lot, and surely names like Jennifer or Jessica or Mary may not make a big impact, but if you're thinking about naming your child something like Hamlet, or Reagan or Goneril, or even, I don't know, OPHELIA.... don't. That kind of thing, it just ain't right. The girl at my camp, whose parents purportedly DID name her for the Shakespearean character Ophelia, wanders around crying and talking to herself. If you don't know why that's significant, stop reading this and go read something worthwhile. I do have to wonder why she and her sister (twins) weren't named for King Lear's daughters instead, after all one is whiny and one is demanding, but whatever.

That's all I have to say, perhaps it also says a lot about my afternoon... because it ought to.

Getting back in the game

Now that I have this new computer, I'm getting back on top of all my "TV" watching-- first and foremost is NBC's semi-based-on-the-bible show "Kings" which draws its inspiration from the story of David. I watched the pilot and recommended it to Jeremy and we're both in love with it now! I've been really behind recently and have almost caught up (only 2 shows to go now!) and have been really pleased with some of the things they're doing. Jeremy says that even though it isn't an exact copy of the story, the spirit is there, and I think they've stylized it in a way that it's clear they're trying to do David as, perhaps, Shakespeare would have. Ian McShane (Deadwood, Scoop) is King Silas, and he is about as Shakespearean an actor as you can get, and the boy who plays David is a very wholesome-looking Australian actor whose name I can't remember. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it-- it pleases the biblical crowd, the Shakespearean, and those who just love a good old-fashioned story of love and glory.

I've also gotten in to a bit of a routine with my movies, which means I finish a DVD a day when I get home from work-- I'm wrapping up season 2 of "Big Love" (another one I highly recommend) at the moment and can't wait for 3 to come out on DVD. I can't remember all the interviews with Mormons and Polygamists that I saw at the time I was watching it real-time on HBO, but I think the show does an interesting job of showing all aspects of plural marriage, and how perhaps it isn't that different from the marriages that go on in all religions. I realized while scrolling through my queue today that I hadn't put up my waits in a while, and I'm very amused by my current wait list so I'll share

-Deadwood
-Namastey London
-Kingdom
-Watchmen
-Coraline

I know it's probably bad that I have so much on there that I forget what I have, but doing this little "What's on wait?" game refreshes my memory and gets me excited. I'll also be wrapping up "Desperate Housewives" this weekend (hey, my tastes vary, don't judge me!) and Joe's next picks (I make my friend Joe pick numbers from my Netflix queue to decide what I'll watch next) are "Boston Legal" (another show I missed after a season and a half of watching), The Brothers Grimm (with Heath Ledger), and The Brave One (with Jodie Foster and NAVEEN ANDREWS!). Yee haw!

Oh Happy Day?

This weekend was a lot of fun even though I was a little under the weather-- Sophia came to visit! I miss her soooo much! Friday night we went to El Tesoro and then hung out with Meg and Michael for a while. Saturday we got up early and helped mom set up for her yard sale, which went pretty well, then Jonathan (who was back to pick his mother up) came over for breakfast, and Michael brought Julian and Violet and I made bacon, veggie sausage, biscuits, and waffles. I was going to make eggs, but mom boiled them all and I didn't realize until everyone was about to walk in the door! Anyway, breakfast was nice and it was very family-like to hang out and shoot the breeze and play with the baby and watch Julian be a goofball.

After everyone left, we thought about going to see an IMAX at Fernbank since it's cheaper with our membership, but then we started talking about other movies and I remembered that Northlake Movie Tavern does $5 Saturday movies before 6p, so we decided to go see The Hangover after going to Fernbank. We went up and walked around the rose garden, and then went in to see the dinosaurs. Afterwards, we came back and helped mom pack up and found out which stuff from the yard sale I get to keep for the apartment. Then we went to the Movie Tavern and had a blast. The food was yummy, they had Blue Moon on draft, and it was the best $14 we ever spent at a movie! Oh, and the movie was pretty darn funny, too. :) After the movie, we did something I don't remember and hung out with the K's for a while.

Sunday we went to Target, where Sophia found a waffle maker for $7 and I got a bunch of clearance groceries! Then we went to Lenox and wandered around for a while, and stopped by a Pier One that was going out of business-- talk about a smart move! I'm hoping that by the time Friday rolls around, the dining room table I want will still be there and down to $100! If it's down to $75, and the side table I want is down to $15 then I'll just have to get both of them ;) It's my impetus to clean out my car. The table is really nice, dark wood with red legs, and it's a drop leaf to fit six-- it was originally $300!

After a while, we came home (exhausted and hungry) and then ate some more at Palate, and went over to Iggy and Wade's to watch True Blood and Hung. We all remarked on the fact that Sookie is way more annoying this season than last.

Last night things took a turn for the worse... I woke up with a fever around 2a and have had one ever since :( My ears feel like someone's shoved a Q-Tip in too far (to which Jeremy remarks that he knows how that feels... Valerie!), and I coughed so much at work this morning I almost threw up! Thankfully, VBS doesn't require as much of my attention and so I was able to slip away and do most of that in private without getting it all over someone else.

VBS wasn't too bad, though the head lady is a little bit prickly and doesn't care much for the camp kids or the counselors, even though she doesn't want to seem to help us figure out what we're supposed to be doing! They also had some really boring music for a church that's known for having one of the best music programs in the area-- Jeremy said the second song we did this morning is a really really old one. The first one I don't even remember, which is a change from VBS when I was little-- all those songs would get stuck in my head for weeks! I always liked, "Oh Happy Day" since it was so upbeat and easy to sing. The package they have for this year is Paul and the Underground Church, which I was vaguely intrigued by, but so far it's been either half-hearted or historically (and apparently also biblically) incorrect. The Olympics started in Greece, not Rome, and Saul of Tarsus was from (get this) Tarsus, not Jerusalem. The guy who played Paul in the sketch was reading off a piece of paper, and the script for the visit to the Underground Church had high church Latin, not the traditional Latin that was spoken until post Constantine. Fran let me correct the Latin, though, so I had my happy little dork moment ;) All in all it was OK, and I think some of the church members weren't thrilled with the package either, so we'll see what the rest of the week brings. Maybe Paul will have learned his lines!

Now, to bed-- I still have a fever and I'm super exhausted!

PS- we put in our applications for the apartment this weekend and I'm really excited! If you want to see pictures, go check the place out. It's not our furniture, but I'm looking to do a similar style.

So much to say so much to say...

SO much has happened since the last time I updated! We had spirit week last week at camp and it was a blast-- MY TEAM WON! GO BLUE DRAGONS-- RAWR! The kids had a lot of fun and I think the counselors all did, too. We did have one really sore winner/loser who would goad people on when Red team won and ended up having a complete meltdown when Richard announced the Blue team won overall! For first place, we got to go see "Up!" at the movies, Chick'fil'a for lunch, and Dairy Queen for dessert! Red team stayed at camp and watched "Bedtime Stories", had Chick'fil'a for lunch, and did ice cream sundaes at camp.

Last weekend was supposed to be my house-hunting weekend, but Jonathan came in and we went to breakfast at Sweet Melissa's (yum!) and went shopping at Lenox with Sarah, and I found my tea ceremony tea at Teavana (macha, the traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony blend, is much different from your average green tea, and is whisked with a bamboo mixer in to boiling water) along with some very pretty tea sets. We went to go look at the house on Deerwood (right near the K's and Sarah) that I was excited about and met a really nice lady, Margaret, who was not only an AOII, but also the woman RENTING THE HOUSE! Thanks, landlord! Oh, well. The place was a little bit small, and I'm finding some much better stuff now, so it happened for a reason! Margaret's going to e-mail me to get involved with Gamma Sigma, which she didn't even know was here!

Sunday, Sarah and I met to look at an apartment in downtown Decatur in a courtyard building built in the 1920's. I am SO in love with it, but it sadly won't fit our needs :( For $1k/mo it's a steal in the area, and it's all vintage and even has the beautiful built in cabinetry! But, there's no covered parking and no storage unit for Jeremy's tools, so sadly I don't think we'll be able to do it. I did go and look at another place called The Conservatory at Druid Hills which is back on N. Druid Hills behind the mall that's $849/mo and has garage units to rent for $75/mo! The place was surprisingly big for a fairly new apartment and was really nice. The complex has a pool, tennis courts, weight rooms, all sorts of fun stuff, and they're guaranteeing the $839/mo for the next year! Yeehaw! There are still a couple more to look at, but right now that one's at the top of the list. It's close to all the highways Jeremy might could need to take to work, and it would take me about 10 minutes to get to work from there. Plus, it's gated and very private-- peace and quiet at last!

Richard had kind of been asking me to take on more responsibility slowly, and yesterday he told me that I'm the new Assistant Director of the camp!! It doesn't mean much pay-wise, but it does mean that I'll have a job in to the fall! Hooray!

That's about all, really. Tomorrow is Six Flags day, but I have little girls so it should be pretty easy :) Will update more as I have more, and I'll put up the pictures of the places I've looked at so far soon enough on Flickr.

Exhausted!

But happy.

Good weekend with Jeremy, got some resumes in at shops around Atlanta and had some pretty positive responses, good 4th of July at the square with Sarah, made ribs for the first time (to great success), and introduced Sarah to Ru San's and sushi!

I'm pretty tired, so this is all going to be pictures so I can head to bed!

Went to The Matador with the Kavanaughs, Sarah, and her mom on Tuesday
Violet had refried beans for the first time! She loved them!

A heron we saw around the corner from my house--
he picked up and flew up the street just like he was driving through!

Some of our picnic spread and after dinner games-- Scrabble and Uno!

Jeremy and Sarah finish up a game of Uno after dinnerNo-holds barred Scrabble was fun! We did other languages, acronyms,
and all the other stuff you're not allowed to do in a normal game

Me and Jeremy before the fireworks beganThe fireworks display made Decatur sound like a war zone! We think we
know exactly where all those property taxes have been going...
