Death death death and flu

OK, so that implies way more death than actually happened-- there wasn't any death, just flu. But flu... well, you know, it kinda feels liked death!

I started feeling a little tired on Friday, but that's not unusual, a Friday night is generally low key for us because after a week with crazy kids... you gotta have a little rest! We had John and Paige over for macaroni and cheese-- used ziti and mozarella and parmesean, then added in shredded prosciutto. SO good! Our bacon m'n'c was delicious, but the prosciutto hit the nail on the head. We got them to play a little bit of Mario Kart, which was a BLAST, and played with my new Evo 4G and tried out John's mint juleps for Paige's 40th this weekend. (a vintage cocktail party-- sooo cute!)

Saturday we were both totally exhausted and I was having trouble breathing, so I started using my inhaler and stayed in bed to rest. My throat started to swell up, which is always worrisome, but I thought maybe staying hydrated would keep whatever it was at bay.

Round about midnight my opinion got changed real quick! I woke up and realized I'd been having fever dreams, but not having any acetaminophen I took some ibuprofen and tried to go back to bed. I slept feverishly for a while and moved out to the couch. By 1p, I was in tons of pain and couldn't breathe, couldn't even swallow, so we decided to head to the ER. John works at Emory and it's close by, and we happened to run in to them on our way out so he called ahead to make sure the wait wouldn't be too long.

When we got there, my heart rate was over 140, I was running a fever of 99.5 (I'm guessing I'd been running one of 99-101 since midnight Sat/Sun), and was completely dehydrated so they got me in and put me in a room pretty quickly. The nurses were really nice and hooked me up to 2L of fluids, got me some stuff to get my fever down and keep my throat from swelling any further. We did get stuck there for quite some time after my chest x-rays came back, but at least we were in a room with a TV and plenty of ginger ale!

I'm doing better today, no fevers since yesterday, and my heart rate has normalized, so now I just have to rest up so I can attempt to get back to work soon! The ER doc told me to stay out for an entire week-- that's one of the problems with being a program director, you can't take time off like that!

Aaanyway, that's the most excitement we've had since both getting a lovely case of food poisoning last weekend in the midst of the wine crawl... do NOT recommend that one! The old phrase about March comes to mind-- in like a lion, out like a lamb. I'm hoping that since health-wise we've been coming in like a lion, we'll have a blissfully relaxing end of the month!!

Weight Watchers Win!

I started WW last summer at 176lb, which is WAY more than I need to be! I know for a fact that it will effect your joints and make old injuries flair up, I've also seen a lot of my friends go in to pregnancy slightly over weight and end up with hypertension and on bedrest. My goal is to get down to 135, which is a LOT of weight to lose, but it's where I ought to be and the size I was when I bought all the clothes in my closet that don't get worn because they don't. fit. It's also a good starting point for getting pregnant, because given my history with food, I'm going to be one of those pregnant girls that eats everything!

Today I got on the scale to find that I've officially lost 10 pounds!! I'm so excited, and I've read many times that if you can get the first 10 off, the rest will come along much easier. The weather will still suck for the next few weeks, but I'm hoping by March it will be good enough that I can go for a walk around the neighborhood each day, and that will help, too. I'm also hoping to not get injured like I did last summer-- talk about a setback!

More later, but that's my exciting news for the day, so it gets its own post!

Day One

Gotta start somewhere right?

Today I did the 15 minute pilates workout (which is actually a 20 minute one, but I didn't do any of the standing stuff because I want to get my hip back in the proper place first), and my goal is to do the 15 minutes a day every day for the next week. Then, next Sunday I'll do the full 20 minute workout every day for a week. Week after that, I'll do the full 45 minute workout on Sunday, the 20 minutes during the week, and the 45 minute one on Saturday. While my ultimate goal is to do the 45 minute (full) one more often than the 20 minute (express) workout, I'd like to put my minimum at three times a week, so maybe full workouts on the weekends and Wednesdays maybe. I just really need to stay on top of it this time around. I started last summer when I moved in with Jan and Marc, and I guess because I didn't have a regular schedule post-airline, the whole thing fell through. Now, though, I'm trying to eat better and drink less soda (I've only had two sodas in the last four days! A Sprite and a Coke!), drink more tea. Cutting sodas out is kind of a concession for my beer drinking because, let's face it, beer geeks drink some pretty heavy beer. It's the kind of beer that doesn't actually have nutrition facts on the back!

I say that and it sounds like I'm an alcoholic; really, I only drink on the weekends and it's only like a few drinks a night MAX. Once a month, maybe Meg and I will go crazy and have a couple margaritas instead, but none of us are in that party mode-- that was pretty much over with after college. Plus, when we're drinking beer, we're eating things like fresh salsa, crudite "pizza", hummus, and beans and rice; not heavy on the queso dip and bar food you find with cheap beer! I totally geeked out at Whole Foods last night-- their beer section makes me feel like I've died and gone to heaven. It's bad news, too, because it's right next to the cheese and olives, and then the bakery! I found one of the rarer beers from the Allagash brewery, called Curieaux, and bought the last two bottles. I also made friends with the beer guy who said if I had any special requests, he'd be glad to put them in for me or hold something I wanted! Whoooooo-- gotta love the small town touch to a chain grocery! That's why I love Whole Foods!

Speaking of fresh salsa, my first pepper is FINALLY starting to push out! I'm SO excited-- I'll finally find out what kind of peppers I'm growing! I'm also going to find a place to plant some corn and chianti sunflowers (the red ones, they are super pretty), and I've got small pots to plant basil and other herbs in that we can keep around the apartment when we move. Mom's landlord is really cool, though, and doesn't mind if I plant the bigger stuff like corn, collards, mesclun, and sunflowers in the back yard along the fence-- he thinks it's pretty cool, actually!

Anyway, I'm gonna do a few more ab rounds and then hit the showers. We had a dog food fiasco coming back from Target (the bag just split open and got all over mom's freshly cleaned car!), so I'm going to take that back along with some other stuff that I got last night but don't want as badly as an adorable cherry-blossom-and-Japanese-print apron that they have on clearance for $7, and some other kitchen towels and nice oven mitts. I think between the two of us we only have one or two oven mitts, and they're pretty old-- Target has some nice KitchenAid ones on sale for a few bucks each! After that, it's off to Rosebud for a Yelp! event; hopefully they'll let me in since Emily can't make it-- I'm on the list, and I've been to one before, and I'm meeting up with Sid and Wendy (the nice couple we met at the last event) to all go in together.

I also just spotted my copy of "Walter the Farting Dog" that Martha gave me-- I will have to find this book for Julian. He will be immensely amused.

Oh, Brent

Brent randomly sent me a text message just now with the lyrics to "Safety Dance" that old 80's favorite, which is kind of awesome because it was the one "classic" 80's song I didn't hear on my station tonight. And also awesome because it was just kind of funny and random.

I didn't really get anything done on my to-do list, but I did eat a little healthier which is a good start, I think. I made a yummy salad with field greens, baby portabello mushrooms and carrots and instead of eating more Reeses pieces this afternoon, I had a bunch of Quakes, which are the mini rice cakes Quaker makes. I had too many of them, but they're still better for me than chocolate and peanut butter! Tomorrow, I'm going to do oatmeal for breakfast, some of the Morningstar Farms "hot wings" and a small salad for lunch, and maybe some meatloaf for dinner to get some protien and some more veggies with the green beans and mashed taters. I also need to run a few errands, including finally mailing off the stuff for Ana-- last week just got so busy I didn't have a chance, which stinks because it also means I forgot to get Jeremy to sign a late birthday card for Valerie! C'est la vie, I suppose.

Started watching "Lie to Me" tonight, which is a pretty cool show actually. It's about a guy who is, in essence, a human lie detector-- he's a scientist who studies facial expressions and body language to tell if people are lying. Of course I'll admit I like anything that could be considered a crime drama, but the premise is nifty and the cast is great.

Time for tea and sleep, so more later. Ciao!
