So, we're sitting here waiting... Valerie and Ana's flight was canceled from ORD to MEM so we're assuming she'll be here in the morning but have been unable to get in touch with her. In the meantime, we took Jan to dinner and now I'm watching HGTV with her while Marc assists Jeremy with his obsessive sound deadening of my car! I'm also researching Ethiopian cooking for that fated day when the kids finally arrive in the States. I figure that with so many Ethiopian restaurants in Decatur/Atlanta, and with YDFM right up the street, we're in the best place to pick up spices and whatnot to cook for them!
The last week and a half hasn't been quite as productive at work as I'd hoped, but that's life in the fast lane-- it feels like every time I need to be super productive, the only thing that will get me there is an 11 hour day and I just can't do that to myself! I did get a little bit of work work done here on Friday, but the rest is all paperwork related and has to be done in the office. YIKES what a crazy day Tuesday will be!!
I've taken a few pictures this weekend, and will post those throughout the week since we're starting our 7-3 schedule! 7a is hard for me, but man oh man do I LOVE those extra hours in the afternoon! I'll finally be able to get Alana's cookies out, I'll be able to mail something to Joe, and I'm going to really toughen up on myself and start cleaning out my closet-- things I haven't worn since college, things that just plain won't ever fit again, and stuff I haven't used in a year or more (and not just because I don't own a study where I can hang things on the wall) will ALL be sorted out to go in a yard sale! After the yard sale, whatever's left will go to the Sal Army to get it out of our house! This fall, we hope to come up to Marc and Jan's and get some of our mess out of the way here as well. I'm hoping by then we will have maybe found a new apartment that will fit the desk I painted when I lived in midtown. Jeremy hates that desk (it's too bright for his tastes) but I LOVE that desk!!!
That's all for now since the computer's about to die, but there will be more and I PROMISE I'll be better about updating!

Ravioli Time!
We wanted to have dinner with John and Paige, so we decided on a house dinner on the front porch-- probably the best thing about getting along so well with our neighbors! Jeremy invited Nandan and Anu over and we had a make your own ravioli party!
Paige gets excited about her first ravioli!
Jeremy's up next!
Curried potatoes, butternut squash, spinach, bacon, gruyere cheese, ricotta cheese, and walnuts were on our ingredients buffet-- YUM!
Nandan and Anu sample the options
John takes a gander
Paige and I toast to a lovely evening-- that's the kurta Nandan brought me back from his last trip to India. Ignore the random lady in the background...
Violet was obsessed with Jeremy's marathon medal
AND my high heels! We had to distract her just to get her to leave them here!

The rest of the time
I didn't take as many pictures as I normally do, we were all still a little worn out this week! But, here are a few from our last couple of days together.

Sarah baked oatmeal chocolate chip cookies-- they weren't the prettiest!

"Now Muriel plays piano every Friday at the Hollywood." - "Walkin' in Memphis"

The inside was SO cute!

Jeremy had frog legs!

Which, of course, he had to turn in to a sideshow :)

And his first intentional beet eating since childhood!

PEACH COBBLER!

Glittery cupcakes! So yummy!

Cooking!
I've been trying to get creative with cooking on a fairly limited budget, so I've decided that even though the pre made sauces and mixes aren't always THAT healthy, using them every now and again is a time saver and if you get a good brand they taste pretty good, too!

Fresh veggies!

Stir fry

Stir fry and beef with noodles-- faux pho

Cookin' up a storm

Blackened chicken topped with bacon and pepperjack cheese over rice with corn

Not so red curry-- it tasted like it, though!

Mmmmm onions and chicken
Eggs!
Chopped Chipotles, mayo, and a few secret ingredients
Yum!
Finished product
Sooooooooooo good!
My newest deal is making chipotle deviled eggs, they're a huge hit and SUPER yummy! Here are the ones I made for the True Blood party for the premiere!

Cornish Game Hen!
My most recent cooking experience was with a Cornish Game Hen and it turned out pretty awesome! Jeremy got me a graniteware roaster (my favorite), so I lined the bottom of it with sliced Russet potatoes and placed the hen on top for roasting. Before putting it in the oven, I pan seared it in a crapton of butter (yes, that's a specific cooking measurement in the Paula Deen school of cooking lol) with rosemary and garlic, then I placed it on top of the potatoes and drizzled the pan drippings over the potatoes. An hour later, voila-- the perfect serving for two people and a little left over for lunch!

Jolly Roger
I'm watching the premiere of Deadliest Catch. I love this show. It makes me want to a) visit Alaska, and b) spend a season on a crab boat-- of course, Jeremy wants to work the crab, I'd be OK sitting in and cooking for the crew!
Not too much happened today, but I've been really surprised by the number of campers who have caffeinated drinks in their lunches-- there was a third grader who had a 20oz Mountain Dew!! I never got that kind of stuff in my lunch! I also already have the reputation of that kid with the good lunch-- the youth volunteers are very intrigued by the fact that I cook really good stuff for myself, and all I've brought was my home made meatloaf and a leftovers sandwich (roast chicken and pesto) so far!
Oh, and I made my first meatloaf ever the other night and it was AWESOME! There was garlic, cayenne pepper, oats, and BBQ sauce involved. It was absolutely delicious. I froze half of it since I figured I wouldn't want to eat meatloaf all week, so I'm going to try and hang on to it until Jeremy comes up to visit so he can try some ;)
Ciao for now! Hopefully tomorrow I'll have pictures of the group tomorrow from the Aquarium trip!

First of the Year
Happy New Year everyone! My favorite holiday next to Halloween, where we can spend our time with loved ones and celebrate a fresh start. Check out the links, they're pictures of and by me in Florida; the ones of the manatees at Blue Springs came out great!
Christmas Eve- flew down to Jacksonville where Jeremy picked me up. We took the long way back down to Daytona, stopped at a beach and took a stroll, and drove through St. Augustine before we got home. Relaxed for a little bit with the History Channel and ordered some Papa Johns for dinner. I'd brought down stuff for mulled wine so we cooked some of that up and had a glass (which helped with Jeremy's coughing nast) and wished everyone in Indiana a Merry Christmas on the phone.
Christmas Day- got up earlyish, put up the pictures I had printed for Jeremy and turned on the tree I bought. I started on a pot roast with onions and potatoes, which turned out fantastically. We ate on that for dinner, and watched a movie but I can't remember which one-- we watched about five or six the whole time.
Up Through New Years Eve- We also caught up with the Eiler's Christmas slideshow-- Analia just keeps getting more and more adorable! If they didn't live in Singapore I would offer long-term babysitting for free, she's got such a great personality for such a little girl. Went to the Bulow Sugar Mill and wandered around, it was a really cool place-- once the biggest Sugar Mill in the area that shipped out to St. Augustine, Jacksonville, and Savannah. On the way back we wandered around part of the loop and stopped to take pictures of the pretty bird. We went to lunch with Jeremy's classmate Ron and his wife Cathy the next day, really nice people and very funny. Ron and Jeremy have the same sense of humor-- no wonder they get on so well! Walked around the little shopping complex in front of Wyotech and then went for a ride around the loop. The next day we rode down to Waleka with them and went out to the dock and watched the water for a few minutes. It was so much fun to be back on the bike again, and now that I'm not stressing my joints at work it doesn't hurt to ride for more than half an hour! Stopped at a great little country restaurant called MeMa's where we had corn nuggets (which were amazing!) and I got a shrimp basket for $7 with 1/3lb of fresh shrimp in it! Yum!
We laid low over the next couple days, made a couple grocery store runs, talked wedding stuff, and planned for the next week. We went down to Blue Springs State Park where the manatees were to see what we could see and... there were manatees galore!! We got to see a mama and calf, and several others hanging out throughout the naturally warm springs. We're definitely going to go back this summer when the manatees are gone so that we can swim and maybe find a place to get tubes and tube up to the St. John's river. We got home to find that the USPS had put a "Vacant House" card in the mailbox because I'd put a letter for one of the old residents in marked "No Such Resident, Return to Sender" so even though they've been delivering mail for months for the people who DID live there, they decided they were just going to stop.
New Year's Eve- we just kind of hung out for most of the day, watched some silly TV and played some Wii (though I also just watched Jeremy get angry with the Wii tennis-- way amusing), drank our champagne and watched a movie on Netflix. At midnight, we cheered, kissed, and said, "Well, I guess we're getting married this year, huh?" Went to bed not too much later after that so I could get up the next day and cook!
New Year's Day- Cooked up a good ol' meal of collard greens, black eyed peas, and corned beef. I forgot to get cornmeal, so we didn't have cornbread, but the greens and peas were the important part. We ate plenty, so we ought to have plenty of luck and prosperity this year; I'm not usually superstitious, but I take my New Years seriously! Besides, we could both use a bit of each! Watched another movie, I think the one about Genghis Khan, and discussed how silly the USPS is. Jeremy did get it straightened out, so no worries on the mail.
Jan. 2nd- We decided to go up to St. Augustine because everyone said it was super cute and charming, and I wanted to see all the historical stuff... BIG mistake. Unless you're ready to fork out $25/person just for parking and historical stuff, not including food or even water, don't even step foot in St. Augustine. Drive through, ooh and aah at the cute buildings, and then drive right on out. The parking was hard to find and expensive, all the historical stuff charged, we couldn't find a coherent map to figure out where we were so we just wandered around for a couple hours, and since the whole city seemed out to pick our pockets, we didn't feel like stopping for food. Plus, the few historical items seemed crowded out by the kitschy tourist stuff. Totally awful. We left in a half-bad mood and didn't really feel like doing anything else-- we skipped Ft. Matanzas and came straight back to Daytona where we had leftovers for dinner.
We didn't do too much exciting over the last few days, attempted Outback and was overwhelmed by the number of people and lack of space (they never seem to have enough tables!) so we got takeout, leaving Jeremy with even more leftovers to eat on for the next week and a half! I got to meet one of his roommates, Jeff, who seemed like a really cool, laid-back guy and his girlfriend Natalie who reminded me of someone I used to work with. It was a nice, quiet, relaxing time and that's exactly the kind of time we like :)
Now, I'm working hard to save for the wedding-- we know what we want, or rather I do, so I'm pretty intent on paying for it myself and not having to depend on outside help for it. My mom said she might help with the deposit for the venue, but since we get that money back (and she likes my plan) it won't be a big deal. I'm really excited about the prospects, and I'll keep everyone updated as I get ideas. It's going to be really creative, really nice, and very classic. Yes, it's possible!
Anyway, off to bed-- I'm already ruining the fairly decent sleep habits Jeremy got me in to this week. No cold water, but he's not big on letting me sleep in; which, to be fair, I asked him to enforce. We're also moving soon, which is exciting, so I'm up early to try and start packing up!

Drove the Chevy to the levy but the levy was dry
I just realized half of these have had song titles, I just happen to always have a song stuck in my head.
Applied at 5th Earl Market today for a counter position-- not much, but still a job! Turns out that vindictive (insert your favorite derogatory terms or curses here) who was my manager at VS said that I was fired, even though I quit because they didn't want to let me take a break after I passed out on the sales floor with a 101 fever and then scheduled me for a day I told them I couldn't work to begin with.
Yeah, that's the story in a nutshell.
It means she flagged me as ineligible for rehire and that I can't get the job at BBW with Em. Otherwise known as the only job I could find. I'm kind of stuck in the doldrums (yeah, 5th grade throwbacks), I know I need to keep applying for jobs and keep on truckin' but it's just so hard when I've applied for over 75 jobs and there's no response to speak of.
Needless to say, today was exhausting mentally, so now I'm sitting here watching (more) HGTV and eating some ramen because I can't bring myself to actually cook. I'll have to get on it tomorrow, though, before some of it goes bad.
I'll leave you on a high note and a recipe for an amazing potato and leek soup! (original recipe, Emeril Lagasse, modified by me)
1lb russett potatoes (about four or five) diced
1lb leeks (about three decent sized leeks) sliced longways, rinsed, and then cut crosswise
1tbsp minced or dried garlic
2 pieces bacon (pref with black peppercorns on, if not, 1 tbsp rough ground black pepper)
2tbsp butter
5 cups chicken stock
2 cups heavy cream
in a large stock pot, melt down butter and put in chopped bacon. heat over low flame until the fat in the bacon has rendered. drop in chopped leeks and cook for about 5 minutes, until the leeks have wilted. pour in chicken stock, tomatoes, and garlic and let cook for about thirty minutes, or until potatoes are soft to fork. pour soup in portions in to a blender and blend to a slightly chunky consistency, then add in heavy cream to taste per portion. you can mix it all together again, and reheat easily.

Oh, oh, I- I can't wait to see you again
That's right, I'm goin' Miley Cyrus on you. What then?
Yesterday ended up ok-- got all my books out of the car and my wicker toiletries drawers, so hopefully now nothing will get hot and explode in my car since it's mostly empty!
Tomorrow/today will be full, but more relaxed since I don't have to go to Smyrna and dodge the 18 wheelers on 285 (THE worst part about Atlanta driving!), I just have to try and get things a little organized so that we can squeeze Jeremy in, hopefully tonight when he gets in on the 9p!
I'm going to also need to make a birthday card for Melissa, my Indiana Rose Buddy, and send my little her surprise package. I keep getting confused on Facebook because one of our new girls has the exact same name as Jeremy's sister (well, her maiden name, actually), so even though I know Valerie Clark isn't Jeremy's sister it still makes me do a double take. Speaking of which, Analia is starting to take steps on her own now! She was such a sweet baby, and continues to be it seems, and Jeremy and I can't wait to see her again. She thinks he's the best thing since a fresh bottle, so I think maybe I'll get dad to take a picture of us to send to her and I'll take a super goofy one of him since that's what she likes most. I'll just have to preoccupy myself with Ana, 'cause I don't need one for a while yet...
Oh, and cooking. Definitely cooking. The fall social last night definitely re-energized me a bit, so now I think I can pick myself up and do what I oughtta. We have butternut squash, chicken, and potatoes and leeks that need something done with, so I'll be cleaning out the fridge and freezer and digging in.

Farmer's Market Day!
This morning was the weekly trip to Your DeKalb Farmer's Market (YDFM) which always puts me in a better mood-- something about being in such a bustling place with people from all over the world is refreshing, reminds us all that we're not the only people here. That, and fresh produce and meat and seafood pleases me. There was nothing like the YDFM in Memphis or Southaven, so finding fresh, organic food was really difficult and expensive. The spices at YDFM are insanely cheap-- a few ounces of Tikki Masala (or any other Masala, for that matter) is about 79 cents, and a bag of more bay leaves than I'll probably use this winter is also under $1. I left the rest of my spices with Jeremy because spices are just so expensive everywhere else, and the stuff you get here is better and fresher anyway.
I stocked up on leeks, a pumpkin, squash, cornishons (French cornish pickles), Masala Chicken spice, bay leaves, milk, bananas, fresh baked bread, naan, and fresh catfish.
I think I'll make some potato and leek soup, some potato and squash soup, some Ziti alla Zucca (gratzi Mario Batali), and possibly do some sauteed squash with chicken next week. I'm extremely happy to be cooking again, and I wish everyone's schedules had worked out the last month or so that I was in Southaven, I would have loved to cook for Marc and Jan, and I'm sure it would have been nice for them to eat some healthy homemade food than getting tired of cooking and hitting up Texas Roadhouse. I think I could get tired of baked potatoes! It also would have been nice to do since it's looking less and less like I have employment options to send them money for rent...
I'm hoping cooking will take my mind off some of that-- I hate not working or going to school, having something to do with my days, because I feel a little useless and pointless. Not depressed, just... pointless, I think, is the best word. I'm going to re-vamp my CV again and send it out to like everyone I know in the hopes that they can find something. I'm also going to take mom's car tonight and run up to Pier One and try to get an application in for holiday work. I'm sure they have more than they need already, but I'll never know if I don't try!
That's all for today, I'm going to watch a movie and put up some clothes, and start putting things back in the car to go to storage first thing. If you have any more suggestions for the squash or pumpkin, feel free to leave them-- I love learning new recipes!

Naan-- it cures all ills
In the midst of trying to figure out what on earth I'm going to do with my car since it apparently has an exhaust leak and I don't have my handy dandy boyfriend to fix it, nor do I have any money, I decided I needed Naan. There's a little Indo Pak groceries up the street and so I stopped in and picked up some frozen garlic naan, completely missing the fresh stuff until after I had gotten in the checkout line. It took a lot of maneuvering to get to the line, too. I'm sure a market in real India is much more chaotic, but for the tiny little grocery, there were too many carts, babies, and (yes) jackhammers for the space. No worries, though, I liked it there. The smells were great, the people completely unbothered by anything else-- it was nice. I also was reminded how much easier it'll be to cook different stuff now that I'm back in Atlanta than it ever was in Memphis. I did, however, forget my mole sauce and curry mix at Jeremy's.
It was a somewhat stressful day, apparently I'm psychic which is a bigger burden than I thought it might be, but things will settle soon enough. Mom and I are going to look at houses and apartments, and hopefully by this time next month I'll have my own room and our bathroom will be at least mildly more functional than this one. I do enjoy my bed, though. I have a daybed in the living room next to the windows that look out on to the street. The neighborhood is quiet, but since it's not a dead end like Westchester, there's still through traffic to watch. Loads more bikes than I remember from a few years ago, so hopefully that bodes well for possible mechanics jobs in Atlanta-- it would be nice if we don't have to go anywhere near Memphis again, we're both pretty sick of that city.
Anyway, I'm watching Jericho (which is awesome) and considering thawing out a chicken breast to cook up with some herbs de provance or something. Since it would appear my family's new version of dinner is cereal and whatever the heck my brother decides to dig up for himself. This will have to change.
